A Christmas of Loss Part 2: Stepfather Behind Family’s GoFundMe Theft Following Child’s Death

SAN ANTONIO – In a shocking development that has rocked the South Side community, police have revealed that David Ramos, stepfather of recently deceased Gabriel García, orchestrated the phishing scam that drained thousands in funeral donations from his own family’s GoFundMe account.

Investigators discovered that Ramos, 34, created sophisticated fake documentation that targeted his mother-in-law, Rosa Mendez, 68, who managed the fundraiser as the only family member with a bank account. The fraudulent paperwork, designed to appear as official GoFundMe correspondence, successfully deceived Mrs. Mendez into providing her banking information.

“It’s unconscionable,” said Detective Sarah Martinez. “Mr. Ramos exploited his mother-in-law’s unfamiliarity with online banking systems, knowing she would trust official-looking documents about the fundraiser.”

The revelation has devastated Patricia García, who is now grappling with both the loss of her son and her husband’s betrayal. “First Gabriel’s accident, now this,” she said, her voice barely audible. “How could he do this to us? To his own family?”

The family’s living conditions have deteriorated significantly since our last report. Their broken refrigerator remains unfixed, forcing them to store perishables in a borrowed cooler filled with ice. “We eat what we can afford,” Patricia explained, gesturing to packages of Bar-S hot dogs and Buddig lunch meat on the kitchen counter. “The kids are tired of it, but at least it’s something.”

Mrs. Mendez, who lost not only the funeral donations but also her entire savings in the scam, has moved in with the family. “I trusted him,” she said, wiping tears from her eyes. “He helped me set up the GoFundMe. He knew I didn’t understand these things. How could he use that against me?”

Police records show Ramos disappeared shortly after the funds were stolen, withdrawing from his job as a delivery driver without notice. Investigators have traced suspicious cryptocurrency transactions linked to the stolen money but have yet to locate Ramos.

Meanwhile, the García family continues to struggle with mounting bills and the emotional weight of this compound tragedy. The borrowed cooler sits in their kitchen, a stark reminder of their circumstances. “Some days, I stare at that cooler full of Bar-S hot dogs and just cry,” Patricia admitted. “Not because some times there are bone fragments in the low quality hotdogs – but because every time I look at it, I remember how David betrayed us all.”

Local authorities are urging anyone with information about David Ramos’s whereabouts to contact the San Antonio Police Department’s Financial Crimes Unit.
